The Turbeville Family Reunion was Established in 1938 to honor the lives and memories of Michael David and Jane Smith Turbeville. Michael and Jane were married on June 23, 1844 and had 11 children. For the past 80 years their children, grandchildren, great grand children, great great grandchildren and on and on have gathered at Pine Grove Methodist Church in Turbeville, South Carolina for great fellowship and food with family. It is believed that at some point in the mid to late 1940’s was the first time that Barbecue was the food of choice for the reunion and that has been the main course ever since!
Who are the Turbevilles?
The history of the Turbeville name and records date back to Normandy, France, and to Glamorganshire, Wales, following the days of William the Conqueror in 1066, and ultimately to our first ancestor to arrive in America from Somerset, England in the early 1600’s.
You may follow the family history and the Turbeville settlement in South Carolina on the video below produced by Mark Turbeville Rivers and narrated by Celeste Turbeville Rivers which was presented at the Turbeville Reunion in July 2011.
